Naples’ name reflects a vision that began more than a century ago: creating a winter retreat inspired by the beauty and warmth of the Italian coast.
As Naples News Now explains, Kentucky businessmen John Stuart Williams and Walter N. Haldeman helped launch that vision in the 1880s. In 1886, the Naples Town Improvement Company acquired approximately 3,712 acres for $11,136—just $3 per acre. The name evoked Italy’s Bay of Naples, inviting prospective visitors to imagine sunshine, scenic waters and an appealing coastal lifestyle.
The pier and first Naples Hotel helped make the remote community accessible to travelers. Although development brought financial challenges, the original dream endured. Today, Naples’ beaches, waterfront neighborhoods and relaxed pace continue to attract people seeking their own place in Southwest Florida.
